Clean Living, How to Detox Your Home

August 7, 2019

OUR BODIES ABSORB NEARLY EVERYTHING THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH, EVEN IF YOU CAN’T SEE IT. CHEMICALS, TOXINS, AND ILLNESSES ARE UNAVOIDABLE IN OUR MODERN WORLD BUT THERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MAKE YOUR HOME A CLEAN AND HEALTHY RETREAT.

* All products listed have been tested by us and have a positive impact on our health, environment, and the planet.  At Wesgrove, the health of our environment is our top priority.*

1. HOUSE PLANTS

Adding greenery to your space in any form will help in detoxing the air, but there are a few plants that stand out as the best at removing chemical vapours. Here are a few:

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

Peace Lilies are an easy house plant to look after. Only needing a weekly water to promote growth, they will bloom gorgeous white flowers and keep your home’s air clean and purified.

Toxins removed: benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene

Aloe Vera (Aloe vera or A. barbadensis)

Often thought of for their anti-inflammatory properties and helping with sunburns, it is also one of the best plants for air purifying too. They thrive in warm well-lit rooms and will even grow brown spots on their leaves to show you the amount of harmful chemicals they’ve absorbed.

Toxins removed: formaldehyde.

Rubber plants (Ficus elastic)

Originated from India, the Rubber Plant is a very hardy plant that thrives in brightly lit spaces. They adapt well to whatever pot they’re planted in and need minimal attention.

Toxins removed: xylene, benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.

Snake Plant/Mother-in-Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata)

It is a low maintenance plant that is hardy and thrives on neglect – the perfect house plant! Just be careful not to overwater as they prefer dry conditions.

Toxins removed: formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, benzene and xylene.

2. NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS

We love mixing DIY cleaning recipes with Saje Wellness products to detoxify and clean our home.  These products not only work great, but they do their job without adding in toxins to your “clean” home.  We’ve listed some easy swaps from Saje that are free of any harsh chemicals.

Saje “Multi Clean” All Purpose Cleaner

This cleaner is great for any surface area in your home or office. It gets the job done without any nasty chemicals.

Saje “Dish Wish” Dish Soap

Avoid chemical residue on your dishes with this all natural soap. It also reduces the toxins that are flushed down your sink.

Saje “Laundry Love” Wool Dryer Balls and Laundry Blend

This set leaves your laundry smelling fresh without any chemical irritants. Many people are allergic to laundry detergents and don’t even know it. Try these and see if your skin and general health improves.

Saje “Liquid Sunshine” Candle

For the candle lovers out there, this one is lead free, bleach free, and chemical free and comes in a variety of amazing scents.

Saje is also known for their beautiful line of diffusers and essential oils which are another great way to make your home smell amazing while reaping the benefits of natural oils.

All of Saje’s products are synthetic and palm free, vegan, and not tested on animals.

3. DUPONT WATER FILTER FOR YOUR FAUCET

This filter (or one like it) attaches to your home faucet and filters your tap water to reduce sediment, chlorine, cysts, linden, benzene, asbestos, mercury, and lead.

Clean water is essential to clean living and can make all the difference in your health. Having easy access to it at home will also help reduce your plastic footprint by limiting your water bottle usage.

4. ELIMINATE PLASTICS, USE GLASS WHENEVER POSSIBLE.

This goes for containers, vases, toys, furniture, etc. Always opt for the more natural material to limit the toxins that plastics release. The alternative materials also last longer, decreasing what ends up in the landfill.

5. BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR MOLD AND USE AN AIR PURIFIER.

Check window wells, bathrooms, under your kitchen sink, and other humid areas at least once a season.

We use a Levoit Air Purifier at home and in the office. This helps remove mold, dust, pollen, dander, and other allergens from the air. We notice a huge difference, especially in the spring when pollen levels are high.

6. USE ZERO-VOC PAINT.

Behr, Benjamin Moore (Natural/Aura line) and Sherwin Williams (Harmony line) are all zero-VOC (free of carcinogens, VOC’s, formaldehyde, or phthalates) and help to minimize the growth of mold and mildew in your home.
